In Celebration of Women's Day...

The 97th annual celebration of International Women's Day is almost over. Sigh! I really wanted to post something profound about this very special day for women all over the world. However, "something profound" eludes me. =( So, I'm just gonna share a funny thing that happened at the office this morning -- yet another oops moment for me. hehehe.

I'll try to avoid name dropping to protect the identities of the people (and group) involved.

You see, my close friends (in the office) and I were talking about politics and the candidates for this year's elections and I happened to ask one of them which party list she was gonna vote for. She named a women's group being promoted by one of our office mates. His mom is hoping to grab a position in congress through said women's group.

Do ya know what my initial (and very loud!) reaction was? "Ngekz!" It cracked everyone up and I even got high-fives! Well, I was pretty embarrassed to say the least! It was a candid remark from me and I should've censored myself. I didn't want to come across as a mudslinger, someone who would diss other groups just to promote mine.

Everyone (I think) in the office knows that I'm supporting Gabriela Women's Party for Congress (partylist) and I didn't want them to think that members of the progressive women's movement would disrespect other groups to get ahead. I'd like to think (and I have it on good authority) that Gabriela is better than that. It does not condone, nor does it practice, mudslinging of any kind. The movement aims to obliterate class exploitation, with special attention to the subjugation of women across all sectors, particularly among the masses. It also seeks to tear down all kinds of stereotypes of both men and women. There's more to say on the subject but I'm really sleepy so I'll leave that for another entry.

Anyway, I'm embarrassed to say that my remark (no matter how innocent or candid) violates the principles that were instilled in me during my younger years. I'd like to emphasize that I support the progressive women's movement and would hate to be called a bigot.

As for Gabriela Women's Party -- the group I'm supporting -- well, it rockz! Yeah, they've been branded as communists, but heck, who hasn't been tagged as one these days? Our government is quick to cry "communists!" whenever a group or person shows even the least amount of "rebellion" as they put it. Ho-hum! What's new?

I say, let's put responsible, principled, and (pleez!) intelligent people in congress. We have enough morons running around the halls of our supposedly noble legislature already. Support who you think is the best, but please, please choose wisely!

Whoa! It's 11:30 PM already? Guess I'll have to shelve the rest of my Women's Day blog (and rants) for some other time -- most likely, March 8, 2008! hahaha

Happy (International) Women's Day Everyone!
